Welcome to The Dancing School,

The following information is intended to help you get the most out of your dance classes. If you have any questions please feel free to ask your teacher
Dance Etiquette - Part of the discipline of the study of dance is the observance of the following:
  • Arrive on time for class (preferably early so you can warm up).
  • Do not talk or disturb others in class (questions are always welcome).
  • When receiving help or criticism from the teacher the proper response is "Thank you".
  • No food or drink is allowed in the dance rooms (bottled water is ok).
  • Turn your cell phone off.
  • Parents are welcome to observe classes. Observers must remain quiet. Please do not allow young children who are watching to disturb the class.
What to Wear - Your teacher will know you are serious about dance if you dress appropriately:
  • Ballet:
    • Girls: Leotard and tights, ballet shoes. Skirt optional. Hair should be in a bun.
    • Boys: T-shirt and tights or leotard and tights, dance belt, ballet shoes.
  • Jazz:
    • Leotard and tights or leotard and jazz pants, jazz shoes.
Make-Up Classes:
  • If you must miss a class, ask your teacher what class would be best for you as a make-up.
  • Make-up classes should be taken within one month of the class that is missed.
  • You may make-up your class in a different type of dance from the one you missed, if you like.
  • Make-up classes may only be taken while you are enrolled in your regular class.
Recital:
  • Recital is usually the second Sunday in June.
  • Attendance at dress rehearsal the day before is required.
  • Costumes are ordered and payment is due in December.
  • The recital fee is due in April. This helps to pay for some of the expense of the production.
  • Tickets are not required for Recital. You are welcome to invite as many guests as you like.
2nd Street Dancers:
  • The 2nd Street Dancers are the performing group at The Dancing School requiring extra commitment.
  • Open auditions are held each Fall.
Suggestions for Success:
  • Should I practice at home? Young beginners should not worry about practicing at home.
  • Serious ballet students should be taking class a minimum of twice a week.
  • Placement in class levels is determined by the instructor. It is important that students work at the level best suited to their skills. Pushing a student to advance too quickly causes weak technique.
  • Ballet students should not begin pointe work until they have reached specific levels of skill, strength, and growth. Your teacher will advise you.
  • Individual parent/student conferences with the director/teacher are available by appointment.
General Information:
  • Young dancers should be met at the stairway after class. They should not leave the classroom unescorted.
  • Please review The Dancing School Policy Statement for further information.
